Activity

Understanding the Text - "I Went Walking" by Sue Machin & Julie Vivas

  1. Open the Google slides (on the right) and follow the written and audio prompts as you listen to and think about the text.

  2. Read beautiful stories every day for enjoyment.

  3. Encourage your child to draw, talk and 'write' every day. Beginning writing might look like a picture, scribbly marks, single letters or even some words including their own name. Accept all attempts at writing and encourage your child to tell you about their pictures and writing.

Success Criteria

I will know I am successful when I:

  • tell more than one addition or subtraction number story

  • explain my thinking to someone else.

Outcome

Discuss

Activity

Choose one of the pictures to the right.

You will use it to tell an addition or subtraction story.

  1. You will need a collection of about 20 small objects (buttons, lego bricks and pasta pieces work well). Imagine what your objects are going to be depending on the picture you choose.

  2. Roll a dice and add that many objects to your picture card. For example, if you rolled a 6, put six buttons on one tree.

  3. Roll again to add a different number to the second tree.

  4. How many objects altogether? How did you add them together?

  5. Tell a story about adding the numbers together.

  6. Draw a picture to show what happened and record some numbers to match.

Questions to support my thinking

Activity too hard?

  • Use a smaller amount of objects/work with smaller numbers (less than 10).

Activity too easy?

  • Add three numbers/groups of objects

  • Roll the dice more than once to get a bigger number each time. Or double the number you roll.

  • Tell a subtraction story by taking some objects away.

For this story card, you are going to imagine birds, apples, possums or monkeys in the trees.

For this story card, you are going to imagine ants, snails, ladybirds or lizards in the grass, or any bug you choose!
