Understanding the Text - Grandpa and Thomas by Pamela Allen

  • Open the Google slides (on the right) and follow the written and audio prompts as you listen to the story and think about the text.

  • Read beautiful stories every day for enjoyment.

NB. for Parents - Encourage your child to draw, talk and 'write' every day. Beginning writing might look like a picture, scribbly marks, single letters or even some words including their own name. Accept all attempts at writing and encourage your child to tell you about their pictures and writing.

Questions to support my thinking

Activity too hard?

  • Join in saying the repeated sentence - "Swish, swash, swoosh sings the sea." Draw your favourite thing that Grandpa and Thomas did together.

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic (2)

How could Papa Bear cut this sandwich so that the four bears can share it equally?

Find more than one way to cut the sandwich.

Draw all of the different ways.

How can you check if the pieces are equal in size?

Activity too hard?

  • Fold and cut a square of paper to make four smaller equal sized square pieces.

  • Now can you fold another square to make four triangles?

Activity too easy?

  • What if there were two sandwiches to share equally with 8 bears? How would you cut the sandwiches and share them? Find more than one way.
